Sponsored Ben Nevis climb

Our climbing party set off at 6am this wet Thursday (July 7th) morning. We all awoke at 5 and I dropped them off at the foot of “The Ben”. It was just starting to rain and the forecast has not promised much of a change. I’m now back at our accommodation waiting for their call with fingers crossed for a good climb for them.
As most of you know, this sponsored climb is being undertaken by Lynne and Dave Jafrate (for Nightstop in Stockport) whilst on Honeymoon along with some of thier wedding guests (they got married here on Tuesday. The weather has been so changeable this week a lot of the wedding guests have done the climb as and when they felt it was good for them. We have had a real mixture of sun and rain to date, it was sunny and dry for the wedding, which was a woodland wedding so it made the day more special.
Lynne and Dave have gone up with Steve (my Hubby) and McKenzie our 10year old Grandson. McKenzie is doing his walk in aid of Help for Heroes and his school.
Its now 9.45am, the rain has stopped here in Roy Bridge and a lot of the low cloud has lifted from the mountain range but it looks very black over The Ben, I can see the snow now on the tops of the range.
We went to the silver sands of Morar yesterday, it was so beautiful the water is so clear and the sands so white. If you are up this way, take a trip but take a picnic because you won’t want to move. We are staying in Roy Bridge at Kinchelle Croft (self catering cottages) and they are fabulous, I’m sat in the lounge with the patio doors open onto the garden, with the most spectacular uninterrupted views of the Nevis range. Everything here is perfect from the accommodation to the location. We are definitely coming back. I will post some pics when I get back. We have been up Aonach Mor via the gondola, I can’t find words to describe the views from there.
Well folks, its now 10.35 I wonder where they are now. I think I will head off to Fort William in about an hour, get some milk and bread, we said if they make the top we will go for a celebratory meal so if not they can have toast and milk (only joking), The rains started again and the cloud has covered the mountains, I can’t see any of them. The little fledglings come right upto the doorway and just perch on the ledge, one little step and they will be in the lounge. Right I’m going to give this a rest, get a strong cup of tea and come back to you later.
It’s 11.10 and I just thought I would have a go at ringing them and I got through, they made it to the top and are on their way back down, they think they will be down in a couple of hours. They made it down at 2pm, Lynne said it was worse coming down than going up. They are all soaked through, so its home and hot baths for all.

The BIG Sleep Out

The BIG Sleep Out: Details

Type of Event: Sponsored sleep out

Date of Event: 22nd January 2011

Time of Event: The sleep out is to officially start from 10pm, however you may arrive any time between 8pm and 9.45pm. The sleep out will officially finish at 6am.

Registration: Please ensure that you have signed the register on arrival. Also bring with you your signed disclaimer form and registration form detailing your emergency contact name and number and .

Venue: St Joseph’s RC Church
Tatton Street
Stockport
SK1 1EJ

Sleep out area: You will be sleeping out in the school courtyard, which is situated next to the church. As you enter Tatton Street the courtyard is straight ahead and is clearly visible. There will be a host awaiting your arrival and will direct you to either the church hall or the car-park facilities if necessary.

Food & Drink: There will be basic foods available including soup and scones as well as a variety of hot drinks provided on the night. You are more than welcome to bring any additional snacks, supplies or water however alcohol is prohibited.

Facilities: In the event of adverse weather we will have full use of the church hall for the duration of the event in which to take shelter. The hall is conveniently accessed directly from the courtyard. Toilets are available.

First Aid: St John’s Ambulance will be on site and available for the duration of the event to administer first aid if required.

Duchy of Lancaster Donates £500 to Nightstop

A cheque for £500 from the Duchy of Lancaster Benevolent Fund (Greater Manchester) was presented to Nightstop Stockport & Trafford, by Deputy Lieutenant Dr Mukti Bhattacharyya on behalf of the Lord Lieutenant of Greater Manchester. After speaking to staff and volunteers, Dr Bhattacharyya said he was impressed with the content and volume of work carried out by Nightstop in the communities of Stockport & Trafford.

Mr John Banbury (Chair) gave thanks on behalf of Nightstop and spoke of the need of support like this to ensure the continuation of this vital work: “Our statistics show the need for all of our services. Providing emergency accommodation for homeless young people in the homes of volunteers is the basis of our work, but we also have a Starters project which has proved invaluable. We provide practical and emotional support to young people, the majority of whom are care leavers, when they get their first independant accommodation. Our support to the young person can continue for many years and our records show many young people do return to Nightstop for support after the initial plan has ended. ”

“Small local charities like Nightstop exist on a shoestring budget and the Duchy of Lancaster donation will enable us to continue providing these much needed services.”

Completely drained say charity workers who go homeless for 17 hours

Vicki Lees and Natalie Dickinson, charity workers for Stockport’s Nightstop charity, decided to mark Nightstop’s 15^th anniversary by going homeless for 24 hours. ‘We work with homeless young people,’ says Vicki, ‘and we wanted to understand what it feels like to be homeless in Stockport.’

Starting at 6am, they spent the day in and around Stockport town centre. Nothing was open at first but they found somewhere to shelter near a block of flats, and played ‘I spy’ to amuse themselves. Later they returned to the town centre, to use the public toilets and to visit the Wellspring. ‘We had a cup of tea and spoke to the staff who all seemed really nice and very approachable’ says Natalie. They met with Stockport Housing who explained how they deal with homelessness.

Next they spent some time in the town centre but felt that they were getting funny looks from passers by and decided to return to the shelter they had used earlier. ‘We felt safe there,’ explains Natalie, ‘It felt like our own place.’ But as the day drew to a close it all became too much and at 11.30pm they decided to give up.

‘We just couldn’t handle it any longer. We were completely drained – tired, wet and depressed. I think the worst thing was having no structure to the day. We just can’t imagine what it would be like to be permanently homeless as we struggled to mange for 17 hours. It was a complete eye opener and really did make us appreciate just how lucky we are to have a roof over our heads.’
